Life is hectic, and there are days that we find ourselves in such a hurry multitasking that we make mistakes such as locking ourselves out of our car. Locking your keys inside of your car is nothing to be embarrassed about, most likely everyone who drives has either locked themselves out or caught it just in the nick of time. The important thing to remember if you do lock your keys in your vehicle is to remain calm, panicking will only exacerbate the situation and put you in a potentially worse position. Knowing how to proceed will help you gain entry back into your vehicle in no time at all.

Know Where Your Spare Key Is Located

If you in fact have a spare key to your car, do you know where it is located? Many people leave spare keys at their homes, offices, or even hidden in the exterior of their vehicles, only to forget where they have placed them. If you lock your keys in your car and you are near your home, it is a good idea to know where your spare keys are located. Placing a key in a magnetic box on the exterior of your vehicle can also come in handy, just remember to securely fasten it so it does not come loose while you drive.

Determine If You Have Roadside Assistance

While there are companies specifically dedicated to providing a host of roadside assistance services, you may or may not have purchased a membership. If you have, then it is important to keep that card and membership info in your wallet or in an easy to access electronic file so that you can call for assistance. Other companies that often provide a limited form of roadside assistance are insurance carriers, credit card companies, and membership to consumer clubs. Checking with these companies to find out more information may prove to be beneficial prior to your time of need.

Waiting On A Professional Locksmith

While there may be temptation to try to get into your vehicle yourself, it is in your best interest to wait for your locksmith to arrive to retrieve your keys. Many of us grew up watching our parents poke coat hangers through the window cracks in an attempt to pull the lock into the unlock position. This worked part of the time, but vehicles have changed and manufacturing has advanced, and you could damage your car in the process without even popping the lock. Resit the urge to stick items into the cracks of your window, potentially compounding your problem is not the solution.
